Parents / Caregivers

"Culturally responsiveness is a more dynamic relationship between home/community culture and school culture."

— Ladson-Billings, 1995

WELCOME PARENTS/CAREGIVERS!

Every student deserves to feel seen, heard, and valued in their classrooms and school. As a parent or caregiver, you can help your child’s school create an inclusive learning environment that reflects and respects your culture and perspectives.

The CRS rubric for parents is designed to provide your anonymous feedback to your school on the extent to which you and your children feel welcomed and connected to the school community.  The rubrics are available in English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, French, and Vietnamese.

They provide a way for you to give feedback on such areas as:

  • The extent to which you feel welcomed at your school
  • The ways the school communicates with you about your children’s behavior, development, and academic progress
  • The extent to which the school encourages families to get involved in school activities
  • Your input on learning opportunities for your children
  • The expectations teachers have for your child to succeed

Here’s What Parents/Caregivers Had to Say About Their Experience with the CRS Rubrics:

  • “The questions about community and curriculum made me realize I need to be more involved in my community and my children's school.” - Lupita, Elementary School Parent, New Mexico
  • “I'm thankful to the school for valuing parents' views.” - Ella, Elementary School Parent, Massachusetts
  • “Thank you for including me and valuing my opinion. The experience inspired me to improve my contributions to the school.” - Frank, High School Parent, New Jersey
  • “It opened my eyes to some areas where we fall short.” - Ole, Elementary School Parent, Minnesota
  • “This was an enlightening experience. I wish there was more time to dive more deeply into this work.” - Lara, High School Parent, New York
  • “Very informative and thought provoking!” - Rahim, Elementary School Parent, Pennsylvania

Ask your school or a teacher how you can help enhance the cultural responsiveness of your childrens school.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE TOOLKIT

The CRS Rubrics are carefully designed self-assessments that allow you to gather feedback from different education partners. Designed as progressions that detail what increasingly deeper levels of culturally responsive activity looks like, the rubrics are more than checklists—they're tools for meaningful dialogue, shared responsibility, and continuous improvement. Explore these four topics that form the foundation of the CRS rubrics.
